Da Matta's family shows gratitude

Cristiano da Matta's family have released a statement thanking everyone for the support they have shown since his accident last Thursday

Da Matta is in a stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit at Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah, Wisconsin, but under heavy sedation.

He was diagnosed with a subdural hematoma, a form of traumatic brain injury, after hitting a deer in testing at Elkhart Lake last week.

The Brazilian was airlifted to hospital where he was operated on, and initial CT scans showed no further bleeding. He does have further swelling, however this is common in such head injuries.

Da Matta's father, mother, two brothers and girlfriend arrived at the hospital on Friday night and have been with him since.

They said in a statement: "We have been fully briefed about Cristiano's condition, and the hospital staff has been providing us with frequent updates.

"We are very happy with the care that Cristiano is receiving here at Theda Clark Medical Center, and we are confident that he is getting the best care possible.

"We will continue to stay here with Cristiano for the foreseeable future, based on his recovery.

"The entire family would like to thank everyone for the tremendous outpouring of support we have received since Cristiano's accident, and continue to receive. Cristiano would appreciate it, and we know it will help him get through his recovery process."

After receiving many messages, anyone wishing to express their support for da Matta is asked to make a donation in his name to Hole in the Wall Camps, an official charity of Champ Car.

Donation information can be found by visiting Hole in the Wall Camps website
