Luca Ghiotto: I deserved to be 2015 GP3 Series champion

GP3 runner-up Luca Ghiotto believes he deserved to win this year's championship more than Mercedes junior Esteban Ocon

Ghiotto picked up five wins and a record five pole positions on his way to second in the championship this season with Trident.

His title rival only won once - in the season opener at Barcelona - a disparity Ghiotto finds odd after losing the title by eight points.

"It's a bit strange to have five times more wins than him and to have a new pole record in GP3, but to not have the championship trophy here at home," Ghiotto told Autosport.

"I think if you look at the numbers I probably deserved it more than him but he was good with his consistency, which is good for him."

Ocon took 14 other podium finishes - including a run of nine straight second places - while Ghiotto was only on the rostrum three times aside from his wins.

Ghiotto highlighted Sunday's reverse grid races as the reason the title slipped from his grasp.

Ocon scored 88 points in those events compared to Ghiotto's 78, while the Italian narrowly pipped his rival by 167 points to 165 in scores from the Saturday afternoon races.

"I think the reverse grid was the main thing that made me lose the championship," Ghiotto added.

"Every time we started on the reverse grid Esteban was able to gain positions and stay away from any crashes.

"I think many times this year I have lost a front wing endplate or had damage on the car that didn't allow me to have enough speed to recover, but that's all part of the game."

The 20-year-old hopes to be on the GP2 grid in 2016 after taking part in the post-season Abu Dhabi test with Trident, Racing Engineering and Rapax.

"The three teams that I tested with in Abu Dhabi are the teams I am looking at for next season, so at least I already have a reference as to how they work," he said.

"I will decide between those three teams."

While Ghiotto ideally wants to move up to GP2 he is aware that budget considerations may force him to look elsewhere.

"Of course there's a problem with the budget and as you know GP2 is quite expensive," added Ghiotto.

"I will definitely not be doing GP3 next season - there's no motivation to do it again.

"I will definitely be moving to GP2 if I have the money. Other than that I have no idea what I can do, we will see."
