Stoner stays ahead in second practice

Casey Stoner maintained his 0.6-second margin over the rest of the MotoGP field in second practice at Donington Park this afternoon

The reigning champion knocked seven tenths of a second off his best time from the morning session and continued to dominate on what he hopes is his resurgence on the Ducati.

For the second session on succession, Colin Edwards was second fastest throughout on his Tech3 Yamaha, only to be pipped with the final laps of the hour.

The American was pushed down to fourth place as former world champions Nicky Hayden and Valentino Rossi stole second and third respectively as the seconds ticked away at the end of the session.

Alex de Angelis continued his good form from this morning to post the fifth fastest time, ahead of Dani Pedrosa, who made progress with his Repsol Honda to climb from 12th place this morning to sixth this afternoon.

Home favourite James Toseland took the sixth fastest time with 15 minutes to go, but he ended eighth after the final lap improvements, just behind Shinya Nakano.

Andrea Dovizioso slipped backwards in the session, finishing up 13th, while Marco Melandri was 14th for Ducati and the returning Jorge Lorenzo could only manage 16th fastest on his Yamaha, a full second shy of Stoner's benchmark.
