Ducati apologise to Capirossi

The Marlboro Ducati team have apologised to Loris Capirossi for the engine mapping problem that left him struggling in the Grand Prix of France

Capirossi briefly got up to fifth place after pitting to change bikes at the same time as eventual winner Chris Vermeulen, but he was unable to control the bike in the increasingly wet conditions and fell to eighth place.

"I started well and I was doing a pretty good race despite the difficult conditions which affected everyone," Capirossi told Italia1 television.

"I think I adopted a better strategy than most by stopping one lap earlier for wet tyres and found myself in front.

"However there was unfortunately an electronics problem, a mistake that made the bike unrideable, so I only tried to take home a few points.

"These things can happen, but I must nevertheless thank the team who today worked very hard. Between Saturday night and Sunday we've turned the bike around, and this morning I was much happier.

"I could go faster in the sections where I had problems yesterday, so I was confident for the race. I started well, so it could have gone better."

Team boss Livio Suppo admitted that Ducati had let Capirossi down in the race.

"We have to apologise to Loris because today his race was influenced by a mistake from the team," Suppo told Italia1.

"The engine mapping wasn't the right one for the wet, while the bike obviously had a wet weather set-up.

"These things can happen but they shouldn't, so we apologise to Loris who is a great rider and has given so much.

"At Mugello he deserves something special. I'm sure he'll be extremely quick there, and the boys at the factory will adapt the bike to his needs even more."
