Moto2: Lorenzo wins thrilling Spanish GP
Jorge Lorenzo won his home Grand Prix of Spain in the 250cc class in what was a thrilling race until three laps from the end
The Spaniard, fellow countryman Alvaro Bautista and Italian Andrea Dovizioso put on an amazing show for most of the race by not only overtaking each other plenty of times, but also by reaching the end of the straight three abreast for many laps, with the men in first and third position swapping places under braking.
With three laps to go, however, Lorenzo managed to get a bit of a gap on the other two, and while Bautista managed to close it by the last turn of the last lap, it wasn't nearly enough. At the flag Lorenzo, Bautista and Dovizioso in that order were separated by less than half a second.
"Victory was very tough because of Bautista and Dovizioso," Lorenzo commented to Italia1. "The bike wasn't as fast as in qualifying."
Dovizioso wasn't completely pleased with his third place: "I'm happy for the podium and for the pace we had in the race, as it was crazy. We were super fast and I had my fastest lap on the last lap. I'm happy but third place doesn't satisfy me."
Alex de Angelis finished in fourth place some seven seconds behind the leading trio, after having momentarily closed the gap with four laps to go, when the top three were still fighting turn after turn.
Alex Debon took fifth place with the two Aoyamas, Hiroshi and Shuhei, in sixth and seventh respectively.
Fabrizio Lai incurred in a jump start penalty, while Marco Simoncelli fell on the second turn of the first lap.
Thomas Luthi parked his bike in the gravel at the end of the straight on the eighth lap in what looked like a mechanical problem.
