Moto2: Iannone scores first Moto2 pole
Andrea Iannone will start his home Moto2 race from pole position after outpacing his rivals by over a quarter of a second in qualifying at Mugello
Iannone conjured up a 1m55.598s lap from out of nowhere on his Speed Up machine for his first Moto2 pole position, 0.26 seconds quicker than points leader Toni Elias (Moriwaki).
"I'm really happy because we had quite a few problems in morning practice," said Iannone. "I wanted to send out a big 'get well soon' to Valentino [Rossi] as well."
Elias languished outside the top 10 for much of the session, and was lucky to escape the gravel trap in the Turn 1 run-off, before a last-gasp effort netted him second with a 1m55.858s.
"It's been a difficult weekend," said Elias. "We have struggled with the balance of the bike. But it's a good position to start for tomorrow."
Hungarian rider Gabor Talmacsi was the early pacesetter, but he crashed at Borgo San Lorenzo, and slumped to seventh as late improvements knocked him down the order.
Another frontrunner to crash was Julian Simon, who fell at Aribbiata on his final lap and will start 10th.
Alex de Angelis will start third on his Scot-run bike, despite a front-brake problem, ahead of Jules Cluzel (Suter) and team-mate Shoya Tomizawa. Sergio Gadea claimed sixth, followed by Talmacsi and Axel Pons.
