Vasser confirms Ganassi's Indy interest
Jimmy Vasser confirmed at Nazareth on Saturday that his former boss Chip Ganassi has approached him about contesting the Indianapolis 500 later this month.
Sources close to the 1996 CART champion, who won the first of Ganassi's four consecutive titles, say a deal has been completed. But Vasser refused to confirm that he will be in a Ganassi car at Indy.
"If this deal comes together, it's the best possible car," said Vasser. "I don't want to run a car that doesn't have a chance to win, and I know all the people there, so it's a good fit. It's up to Pat Patrick [his current CART team boss] and Chip to sit down and work out the details. I want to run the race for sure, but I don't want to do it without the blessing of Mr. Patrick. I want him to want me to do it. If he has any reservations at all, I want to keep my focus here in the CART series."
Vasser finished seventh at Indianapolis in 2000. He was leading the race when he crashed out with 30 laps to go in 1995.
