Unser Jr set for racing return
Troubled US legend Al Unser Jr will return to racing this weekend at the Kentucky Indy Racing League round
The two-time Indianapolis 500 winner entered rehab last month after being arrested on domestic violence charges. He has been treated for alcohol and drug abuse.
Unser Jr has missed two IRL races during his treatment, but was expected to stay away for longer. Now his Kelley Racing team has welcomed his return to the cockpit.
Kelley general manager Jim Freudenberg said: "He looks great, he feels great. He's got the appropriate tools to deal with the demons that he has to deal with. He's ready to go.
"I don't know if serene is the right word, but he's had a very good three weeks."
While Unser Jr has been away, Kelley's third driver Tony Renna took over his drive. Renna has now been rewarded with a full-time drive alongside Unser Jr and Scott Sharp.
"I thoroughly enjoyed the two races subbing for Al Jr but knew from the beginning I would assume my original role with Kelley Racing when Al returned to the cockpit," Renna said. "Now to be given the chance to team with Kelley's great drivers is an honour for me as a young driver. I will have the ability to learn from the best the sport has to offer."
