Tony Kanaan Q&A

Tony Kanaan emerged as the unofficial team leader at Andretti-Green Racing in 2003. The Brazilian was the only AGR pilot who competed in every Indy Car Series event last year, scoring a solid victory at Phoenix International Raceway. Kanaan took the championship fight down to the final round in Texas, where he led 52 laps before a late clash with countryman Helio Castroneves relegated him to fourth in the overall season standings. This year, Kanaan is counting on big improvements from Honda to propel him to multiple victories and hopefully the IRL crown. He recently spoke to John Oreovicz.

"It feels good. We had a good year last year. Our results were very consistent so it's not a surprise that we are one of the favourites. But there is no real favourite. Our team is very competitive with four cars that are all going fast. It's going to be tough."

"Our strength last year was consistency but we lacked a couple of wins. We need to win more if we're going to go for the championship. I won one race and the other guys won three. Even though it played out to the end, it wouldn't have been fair if I won the championship with one win when they had three. So we need to work to win more races and a lot of things need to be in place to do that. But if they can do it, we can do it too."

"We're learning, and it's still early. We struggled a little bit with the setup at the beginning of the Phoenix test, but it's a new track configuration and a new aero package. We just need to get used to it. We might not have looked as fast as we wanted to, but we're working towards the race setup. That's the most important."

"It's going to be a tough year for all of us. It will be very competitive and expectations will be at their highest. You need to be consistent and have luck, but I expect the best. We have a strong team - four cars can help us a lot. We'll see. We are team players and we want the team to succeed. I'm my biggest fan, but if the team is successful, I'm happy."

"Definitely. As human beings we have a tendency to criticise the other series. CART guys criticise us and eventually we criticise them. I've been on both sides and I can say that they are two completely different series. It's not fair to say they are better or we are better. I just say that at the moment, we have better teams than them. I found last year a lot more fun on the ovals. I can't compare to a road course because you can't, but for the oval, we definitely have a better car because you can drive it. You can pass and run side by side. It's not single file like I was used to before. That's why I had more fun on the ovals last year."

"No. If anybody says that, they should ask Darren Manning if he thinks that! It's not easy. It's never easy to drive race cars at the limit, These cars may be easy to drive around Michigan, but the championship is not around Michigan. It's around 10 different kinds of tracks. Even the CART cars had become very easy to drive at Fontana. So it's not easy. If anybody wants to come take a ride, just let me know."

"I would say more than half road races. I'm a road racer, but I'm not going to be picky. If we had even one, two or three I would be happy. The league has a tendency to start slowly and then build up. So maybe in the future we will have five, six, seven or even ten. But right now I'd take even one!"
