Rain thwarts Heritage Indy test

Heritage Motorsports struggled to complete the final test of the year at Indianapolis this week as the winter weather began to set in

The team was attempting to evaluate the Chevrolet and Nissan Infiniti engines for next year's Indy Racing League. Heritage ran the TWR-developed Inifiniti motor in the final IRL race of the season at Texas last month, but has not decided which engine to commit to for 2002.

Driver Buzz Calkins did not get to run the G-Force-Infiniti car as rain hit the famous motor speedway. But his limited testing time was not a waste. "Basically, we just came out the last time before winter rolled around to see where we were with the car, see where we were with a lot of changes through the year since May's Indy 500 and come back with that," Calkins told Speedvision.com. "And also we wanted to try to go and run the G-Force with the Nissan around a little bit to see if we can tell the differences on that."

Bradley Motorsports also attended the test, carrying out evaluation work for chassis manufacturer G-Force. Two-time Indy 500 winner Arie Luyendyk ran his first laps at the track since last May's race when he came out of retirement to return to racing. The Dutchman managed 217.908mph despite the weather, and tried out a new nose and other developments on the British-built car.
