Rain delays Indy qualifying

Heavy rain has delayed the start of Pole day qualifying for the Indianapolis 500, but the Speedway has already seen a large dose of drama, with Billy Boat crashing heavily in morning practice

Boat spun his Dallara-Chevrolet in the fourth turn of famed track, and then smashed heavily into the foam barrier at the end of the wall separating the front straight from the pit lane. The driver has been taken to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Although his injuries have not been specified, Boat has been described as awake and alert.

The rain began to fall 35 minutes before the start of the qualifying session, leaving drivers and teams to wait. At 11.05am this morning (Saturday), a tornado warning was issued for an area west of the speedway.

This morning's practice session also saw the fastest laps seen at Indy so far this year. Ganassi Racing ace Scott Dixon set the pace, with a fastest lap averaging 233.236mph. Robby Gordon was next up with a 232.959mph, with Tony Kanaan, Dan Wheldon, Gil de Ferran, Kenny Brack and Helio Castroneves all breaking the 231mph barrier.
