Luyendyk heads second weekend times

Two-time Indianapolis 500 champion Arie Luyendyk led second weekend qualifiers with a 228.848mph average. The speed is 14th fastest in the field, but Indy's quirky qualifying format means Luyendyk will start the race from 24th on the grid.

"The guys did a good job," said the Dutchman, who set the one- and four-lap IMS qualifying records in 1996. "Conditions are really perfect today. It's not too warm and not too windy. We had a 'Plan B' ready to go, but thankfully we didn't need it."

Michael Andretti was second fastest on the day at 228.713mph after Team Green withdrew his primary car and had him re-qualify the back-up. Team Green's Dario Franchitti and Paul Tracy also qualified at over 228mph.

George Mack became the second African-American driver to qualify for the Indianapolis 500. The 30-year old Californian averaged 227.150mph in his 310 Racing G-Force-Chevrolet.

"Not as fast as I would have liked, but it got the job done," said Mack. "I've been playing catch-up all month and my team stayed up a lot of nights to make this happen. Chip Ganassi's team and Jeff Ward really helped me a lot. I'm grateful to be here and happy for the opportunity."

After crashing in practice on Sunday morning, Billy Boat survived the famed Indianapolis bubble for the second straight year, but his 226.589mph average was 5mph faster than last year. Billy Roe posted a 212mph qualifying attempt that got bumped, while Robby McGehee and Oriol Servia aborted runs that weren't fast enough to make the field.

Other second day qualifiers were Alex Barron, Shigeaki Hattori, Mark Dismore and AJ Foy's drivers Airton Dare and Greg Ray.
