Kanaan surprised by podium finish

Tony Kanaan says he was surprised to even finish the IndyCar race at Watkins Glen yesterday after fracturing his left wrist in a qualifying crash on Saturday

The Andretti Green driver finished third behind Ryan Hunter-Reay and Darren Manning but admitted that a podium is more than he was expecting going into the race.

"If you asked me in the morning if I was expecting to finish third I would have said no," he said. " I didn't even know if I was going to continue in the race.

"The wrist has already been operated on twice and I had a really sharp pain on the outside bone. Every time I turned right it was like someone putting a needle inside my wrist.

"I had that pain all race so I was really happy for all the caution periods, although I couldn't even warm my tyres at one point.

"I don't think we had the right car to win the race even if I was 100 per cent, so I'm not trying to brag about it or make an excuse. But I've got to thank our team because it was their strength that put the car back together, so the least I could do was drive the best I could. That's what I did and that's the best way to thank those boys."

Kanaan expects to be able to drive in the next race at Nashville this coming weekend.

"Let's not say it's a broken wrist otherwise Dr Tramell is going to try to operate on me and I don't want that, so it's just fractured, maybe," he added.
