Kanaan fastest in Nashville testing
IRL IndyCar Series points leader Tony Kanaan recorded the fastest lap during testing at Nashville Superspeedway yesterday (Wednesday), leading a pack of four drivers who lapped faster than 205mph.
The Brazilian recorded a fastest time on 22.7789s (205.452mph) in his Andretti Green Racing Dallara/ Honda, as teams tested on the 1.33-mile concrete oval in readiness for the IndyCar race at the track on July 19. Fifteen drivers turned a total of 2,000 laps during the incident-free test, which was interrupted for nearly 90 minutes due to rain.
"We had a pretty good car right out of the box," Kanaan said. "We're pleased with what we have. The track is fun. Concrete is different to drive than asphalt, but I'm pretty pleased."
Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves was second fastest with a lap of 22.8042s (205.225mph) in his Team Penske Dallara/Toyota.
"We started with a qualifying setup," Castroneves said. "We were working very hard to find a setup for a concrete surface, which is always very difficult. It seems to be good, obviously."
Bryan Herta, winner of the Kansas Indy 300 last weekend, was third quickest in his Andretti Green machine, with a fastest time of 22.8146s (205.132mph).
"We made good progress," Herta said. "I would say that we're not 100 percent happy yet, but we've got a lot better idea what we need for the race car when we come back. It gives us a little bit of a head start for next weekend."
Ganassi Racing ace Scott Dixon was the fourth driver past the 205-mph mark, turning a top lap of 22.8605s (205.010mph), with Briton Dan Wheldon rounding out the top five with a time of 22.8564s (204.757mph).
