Jeff Ward takes pole at Homestead

Jeff Ward, took pole position for Sunday's Infiniti Grand Prix of Miami at Homestead-Miami Speedway, demoting Friday's fastest man Greg Ray into second place

Ward, running in just his second race for new IRL team Heritage Motorsports, had the fastest lap of the qualifying session at 201.551mph in his G-Force-Oldsmobile Aurora.

"This team has created the perfect package to win, and we had a beautiful day," said Ward, "It's always big winning the pole, but we have to re-focus for tomorrow when everyone starts with a clean slate.

"I think the G-Force is a great car, and [crew chief] Mitch Davis knows how to find the speed. The car is an even better race car than it is in qualifying, so I think we're going to have a successful race tomorrow.

"We're podium contenders at every race track where we compete. Tomorrow I think the winners will be whoever can get their car running better. We just want our car to run right, and keep our fingers crossed for a win. I know we'll be competitive, and we have a great shot for a podium finish."

The defending IRL champion Buddy Lazier was third fastest at 199.432mph in a Dallara-Aurora followed by rookie Felipe Giaffone and Sam Hornish Jr. Dallara cars dominated Friday's practice session, but the teams running the G-Force chassis were able to find additional speed on Saturday.

Ray was expected to be the prime contender for pole position and was surprised with Ward's outstanding lap.

"Jeff Ward and the guys hit it spot on," said Ray. "They just got it right. I think the conditions changed quite a bit. This morning the wind changed a lot, and we were set up for that. We have missed just a bit, but at the end of the day I think we'll be all right.

"This track is very competitive. Race day is going to be extremely fast. We'll just need to get set up right for the weather conditions. We're going to make a few changes, but I feel we'll be right there again tomorrow."
