IRL set for Japan
The Indy Racing League has announced that from 2003 the Twin Ring Motegi will be used for IRL races and in doing so become the first round of the all-oval series to be contested outside of America
The announcement comes on the same day as Honda, which owns the Twin Ring, also committed itself to an assault on the IRL championship for 2003 (for separate story, click here.)
"Now that the Indy Racing League has a stable schedule in the United States, we are pleased to take racing based on the heritage of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race to Japan," said Tony George, president and CEO of the Indy Racing League. "It is especially fitting that our first international venue will be at Twin Ring Motegi, one of the finest ovals in the world."
A date has yet to be confirmed for the race but it is expected that it will be a similar early season slot to the one it held in the CART calendar.
