IRL looks to set up feeder series
The Indy Racing League may soon have a support feeder series, similar to the NASCAR Busch championship, which would help to develop teams and drivers for the IRL
Brian Barnhart, the IRL's vice president of operations, confirmed the support series would be used as an inexpensive way for drivers, car owners and mechanics to prepare for a move to the IRL.
The support series would include engines with approximately 450 horsepower and would cost about $750,000 for a team to run the entire season compared to 650 horsepower and three times the running costs in the senior series.
Barnhart expects 20 to 25 cars at each event. The series will compete on all IRL race weekends, except for the Indianapolis 500. He also said the cars could be switched to a road-course configuration and could compete as a support series for the United States Grand Prix, held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in September.
The IRL has seven chassis manufacturers interested in being its sole supplier for the new series, including G-Force and Dallara, which currently build IRL cars.
