IndyCar confirms Detroit cancellation
The IndyCar Series has confirmed that the 2009 Belle Isle Detroit Grand Prix has been cancelled
Reports earlier today that a shortfall in sponsorship for the event had caused it to be removed from next season's calendar were verified by Indy Racing League commercial president Terry Angstadt this afternoon.
"This is unfortunate news but something that Roger Penske and his group have kept us abreast of for some time," said Angstadt.
"The people of Detroit welcomed the IndyCar Series with impressive crowds the past two years, and we support the Detroit Grand Prix's efforts for a possible return in 2010.
"The current economic climate is a challenge for all of us, but as we look ahead to 2009 and beyond, we remain bullish on the opportunities ahead for the unified IndyCar Series. There is little doubt that the IndyCar Series offers considerable value opportunities for current and potential partners of the series and its teams and tracks.
Angstadt also confirmed that no replacement for the Detroit event has been decided, with several venues including Birmingham (Alabama), Utah, a Nashville street circuit, Portland and Surfers Paradise interested in hosting an IndyCar race.
"Any decision on what we might do with a valuable asset like a Labor Day race weekend, either short or long-term, will not be decided upon quickly," he added.
The Belle Isle Grand Prix featured on the Champ Car calendar between 1990 and 2001 and was revived as an IndyCar round in 2007 by Roger Penske after he secured funding to upgrade the circuit and paddock. Tony Kanaan won the event last year and Justin Wilson scored his first reunified IndyCar victory in this season's race.
