Indy 500 appeal is heard (updated)
Team Green's case to overturn the results of this year's Indy 500 got underway today (Monday).
The CART team owner has had three weeks to compile evidence to prove that his driver Paul Tracy was ahead of declared winner Helio Castroneves when the yellow flag came out on the penultimate lap.
Team owner Barry Green, who missed the CART race at Portland to prepare for the hearing, has stated that he wants to see evidence that Tracy was not ahead at the yellows.
Both Team Green and Penske Racing made opening statements, presented relevant evidence and questioned witnesses in front of Tony George, president and chief executive officer of the Indy Racing League. Indianapolis attorney Dave Mattingly, from law firm Ice Miller, was the administrator of the hearing.
"Today was a very productive day, and we were able to reach the goal of the day, which was for both teams to have an opportunity to present information," said Mattingly. "Both Team Green and Penske Racing were diligent in their presentations."
Various Indy Racing League officials were present during the hearing to verify information provided by both teams. The appeal was completed on Monday, but IRL boss George will not announce the outcome for up to three weeks.
