Green Indy appeal date set
Team Green's final appeal against Helio Castroneves' controversial Indianapolis 500 victory will be heard on Monday June 17, in a hearing chaired by Indy Racing League president Tony George
The team is contesting the Penske ace's win because of a belief that its own driver Paul Tracy should have crossed the line first. The Canadian passed Castroneves on the penultimate lap of the race, only to be told that the yellow caution flags had come out for an accident seconds before.
Team boss Barry Green claims to have enough evidence to prove that Tracy made the pass before the yellows were waved. But Castroneves reckons a yellow light in his car that signals a caution period came on before the CART regular made his move.
The hearing has been scheduled for 1600 (BST) on June 17 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Both Team Green and Penske Racing will have an opportunity to make opening statements, present relevant evidence and question witnesses. It is expected that the hearing will conclude on the same day.
While there is no deadline for a decision by George on the final appeal, according to IRL rules, it is normally issued within 30 days. The hearing will be private, as mandated by IRL rules.
