Gordon files Indy 500 entry
NASCAR Nextel Cup star Robby Gordon will run his own entry in the Indianapolis 500 this year
Gordon, who drives for Richard Childress Racing in the topline NASCAR stock car category, will drive a Chevrolet-powered Dallara chassis entered by Robby Gordon Racing. It will be the former CART driver's 10th Indy start, with sponsorship from Midwest-based retail chain Meijer.
Gordon, who has hired veteran Indy car engineer Thomas Knapp to oversee his Indy effort, is the only driver currently planning to compete in both the Indy 500 on May 30 and in that evening's Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR event in Charlotte. It will be the fourth consecutive year that Gordon will attempt what has become known as 'The Double'.
He has also admitted that he may continue in the IRL IndyCar series after the Indy 500. "If we do a good enough job with the sponsors we have now and the team, go there and be competitive, you never know what happens," he said.
Although he drove last year for Andretti Green Racing at Indy, Gordon's best shot an Indy 500 victory came as an owner-driver in 1999, when he went into the last lap with the lead, only to run out of fuel short of the flag, which handed the win to Kenny Brack.
