Ganassi may juggle Indy 500 line-up

CART team owner Chip Ganassi may adjust his line-up for the Indianapolis 500, either by adding a third car for former driver Jimmy Vasser or substituting his two CART rookies for more experienced drivers.

According to a report on ESPN.com, Ganassi has approached Jimmy Vasser and Paul Tracy about driving for him at Indianapolis. Currently, rookies Bruno Junqueira and Nicolas Minassian are entered for the 84th Indy 500.

Tracy expressed interest but his CART sponsor, KOOL, vetoed it. Vasser has to get permission from team owner, Pat Patrick.

"Chip approached me at Long Beach and wondered if I'd be interested in running Indy with Jimmy as my teammate," said Tracy. "I'd like to do it so I asked Barry (Green, his car owner) and he had no problem but the president of KOOL wasn't interested in me being with another team in a different car. They've invested a lot of money in promoting me and they said if I go to Indy they want to be the one to bring me."

Vasser drove for Ganassi at Indy last year and finished third. His team mate at the time, Juan Montoya, won the race.

"You know me, I always want to go to Indianapolis and I've got a couple of interested parties," said Vasser, the 1996 CART champion. "But I can't do anything without the consent of Pat (Patrick) and Jim (McGee). "Something is going to have to happen pretty quick because it's getting late."

Said McGee, "Unless Ganassi comes up with a lot of money, it probably wouldn't make a lot of sense for us."

NASCAR Winston Cup star and four-time Indianapolis 500 driver Tony Stewart has even been mentioned for the Ganassi ride at Indy. Stewart's contract with Joe Gibbs used to have a provision that allowed him to compete in the
Indianapolis 500, but he hasn't driven at Indy since 1999.

If it's up to his NASCAR crew chief, however, the only race Stewart will compete in that day is the Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR Winston Cup race at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte, North Carolina.

When asked his thoughts, Stewart's crew chief Greg Zipadelli said, "No ******* way."
