Friday: Rain limits running

Cold temperatures and the constant threat of rain limited running in Friday's Indianapolis practice session, on a day when some of the teams and drivers decided to stay away

Robbie Buhl, who will start second in next Sunday's Indy 500, was the fastest of those who did run with a best lap of 228.077mph. Airton Dare, who has yet to qualify for the race, was second with a 227.436mph lap.

Alex Barron, Buddy Lazier and Shigeaki Hattori were the only other drivers to break the 225mph mark.

Jimmy Kite has taken over Anthony Lazzaro's Sam Schmidt Motorsports/PDM Racing-run car, and took the opportunity to get some laps in. He was ninth fastest.

The move was made after Lazzaro struggled to get up to speed during the month of May. PDM boss Paul Diatlovich said: "This decision was truly difficult because it doesn't accurately reflect Anthony's skill. It is a result of the unique circumstances presented by the month of May. Anthony has done a wonderful job, unfortunately the month has not gone as planned."

Johnny Herbert was absent from Indianapolis as he concentrated on practice for this weekend's Sears Points American Le Mans Series race. He returns to Indy today (Saturday) for practice and will attempt to qualify tomorrow morning, before flying to California for the ALMS race later in the day.
