Day 1: Giaffone leads the pack

Brazilian Felipe Giaffone set the pace on the first day of the IRL IndyCar Series' annual Test in the West at California Speedway yesterday (Tuesday). The Mo Nunn Racing driver set a fastest lap of 31.8988s, 0.36s faster than the second place driver, Ganassi Racing's Tomas Scheckter

Day 1: Giaffone leads the pack

Both Giaffone and Scheckter were powered by Toyota engines, which claimed seven of the 10 fastest times. Andretti Green drivers Tony Kanaan and Dario Franchitti set the third and fourth fastest times using Honda engines. The fastest Chevrolet runner was Vitor Meira, who set only the twelfth fastest time.

"My car was very good out of the box, and I had two big drafts," said Giaffone. "Tony [Kanaan] gave me the first one, and Tomas [Scheckter] gave me the second one. The timing was just right; I had new tyres, and I was lucky to have everyone in front of me, and I just happened to have a good lap."

The team's now move on to the Phoenix speedway, where testing will resume on Friday and Saturday.
