Briscoe laments missed opportunity

Ryan Briscoe feels he missed out on an opportunity to get his championship back on track at Watkins Glen yesterday when he lost a potential victory by tangling with Scott Dixon during a caution period

Briscoe had started from pole position and led the majority of the race until the final round of pitstops.

He was lying third behind Dixon during a late safety car period, when Dixon spun while warming his tyres. Briscoe had nowhere to go and collected Dixon as both dropped out of the top ten.

Dixon passed on his apologies immediately over the radio, saying "Tell Briscoe I'm sorry, bloody stupid," but the Team Penske driver was left to rue what might have been and now lies eighth in the championship.

"It's unfortunate what happened out there," he said. "I know how Scott feels; there's nothing you can do in that situation. I just wish I didn't get caught up in it. It really was too bad because that took out two of the strongest cars in the race at that point.

"We should definitely be sitting better in the point standings, but that's life and things like that happen sometimes."

Ryan Hunter-Reay was fourth on the road behind Darren Manning, Dixon, and Briscoe at the time but went on to win after passing Manning at the restart.

"Dixon was warming the tyres really hard," said Hunter-Reay. "I was like 'I'm going to see if I can do it that hard', but I thought 'you know what, I might loop this thing doing it'. Low and behold, a lap later there he goes. He's one of the most aggressive tyre warmers out there and there were a lot of marbles off line.

"It was amazing, it was like the sea was parting in front of me. For all the bad luck that's gone our way, it was huge for it to finally go our way a little bit."
