Brack eyes race return
Former Indianapolis 500 winner Kenny Brack has not ruled out a return to the sport that almost killed him
Brack suffered multiple fractures when he crashed into debris fencing at over 200mph at Texas Motor Speedway last month. He has been set a recovery period of six months, which would mean a race against time if he wants to contest next year's Indy 500, but says he will only make a final decision when he is fully recovered.
"I don't have any thoughts about quitting now, but that's a decision I'll take when I get to that stage," said Brack. "Right now, I'm determined to get back 100 percent."
The former IRL champion will undergo another bout of surgery today (Tuesday), which will include placing a bracket on his spine, but says his recovery process is going well.
"I'm coming along pretty good, considering what we went through in Texas," he said. "I'm moving about every day, doing lots of rehab, regaining my strength. It's great to see progress every day."
Brack believes he escaped lightly from such a big crash. Another IRL driver, Tony Renna, lost his life in a testing crash at Indianapolis just a few weeks later.
"It shows there are risks involved with motor racing," Brack said. "It's high speed, things happen, there can be big consequences. I paid a cheap price."
