Al Jr accused of domestic battery
Former Indy 500 winner Al Unser Jr has been charged with domestic battery after a women accused the 40-year-old of hitting her and leaving her at the side of the road
Unser was arrested at his motor home in Indianapolis on Tuesday, although he was subsequently released on 30,000 US dollar bail. A court hearing has been scheduled for today (Wednesday).
The 38-year-old woman, named as Jena Soto, told police that she and Unser had been at a strip club and that she was driving him home because he was drunk. Soto alleges that during an argument on the journey he started shifting the gears in the car into neutral and reverse and that when she hit him to make him stop he responded by hitting her in the face.
She added that she pulled over and got out of the car and that Unser proceeded to driver away. Soto also told police that she had been Unser's girlfriend for four years. On his arrest Unser initially denied knowing Soto, but he later argued that she had hit him first.
Unser drives for the Kelly Racing team in the IRL and it released the following statement:
"Al has the unqualified support of everyone at Kelly Racing and our sponsors. Since joining Kelly Racing, Al has been a phenomenal employee and a true asset to our organisation. He is a leader and works continuously to motivate everyone involved with our race teams. We are here to support him in any way we can."
