100 laps: Leader Kanaan crashes

Indy 500 race leader Tony Kanaan has crashed out after losing control on oil dropped by Bruno Junqueira's car

The poleman's Chip Ganassi G-Force suffered a blown engine not long before the lap 90 mark. Junqueira stayed on the racing line before pulling off into the pits, dropping a trail of oil around Turns 3 and 4.

Kanaan hit the oil and was a passenger as his car snapped sideways. Rick Treadway was also caught out by the slick and hit the wall too. A pack of other cars had to take avoiding action to get round Kanaan's stranded G-Force.

Moments earlier Jimmy Vasser retired his Team Rahal-run Dallara-Chevrolet when its gearbox broke.

Just as Junqueira's race came to an end, his team-mate Kenny Brack also hit trouble. The Chip Ganassi squad is working on his engine in the pitlane.

Meanwhile, Eddie Cheever Racing's Max Papis is having work carried out on his brakes.

The Junqueira/Kanaan/Treadway incident caused the third caution period of the race. Only a few laps earlier the race had gone green following two incidents that had brought out the yellows.

Sam Hornish Jr had glanced the wall, damaging his right rear suspension and puncturing a tyre.

As the drivers came into the pits, Robby Gordon and his crew suffered a frightening moment with a fuel fire. Gordon was fortunate to be able to rejoin, while the team put out the invisible methanol blaze. They have now moved to a new spot further down the pitlane.

After 100 laps rookie Tomas Scheckter is back in front, leading Penske's Gil de Ferran.

Scott Sharp is third ahead of a trio of famous veterans: Paul Tracy, Michael Andretti and Eddie Cheever.
