Extreme Speed follows up Daytona win with Sebring 12 Hours triumph

Pipo Derani gave the Extreme Speed Motorsports team a dramatic Sebring 12 Hours win to add to its Daytona 24 Hours triumph after a frantic finish to the event

Extreme Speed follows up Daytona win with Sebring 12 Hours triumph

Derani was fourth in the queue in his Ligier JSP2 on the final restart but having disposed of the DragonSpeed ORECA 05 of Nicolas Lapierre, he perfected a pair of daring lunges on the leading Action Express cars within 10 minutes of the flag to secure a second IMSA SportsCar Championship win from as many races for the ESM squad.

His final winning margin was 2.926 seconds over the #31 Action Express Chevrolet Corvette DP of Dane Cameron, who edged out Filipe Albuquerque in the sister #5 car.

The Action Express prototypes had led the majority of the event, which was halted for two and a quarter hours due to inclement weather conditions, and Cameron was leading when David Hinton caused a late caution with 25 minutes to go by crashing his Highway to Help Riley DP.

That set up a 15-minute shootout for the victory when racing resumed as Derani - who was sharing with Scott Sharp, Ed Brown and Johannes van Overbeek - charged around the outside of Lapierre at Turn 1.

The Brazilian then charged up to the rear of the #5 car before perfecting a huge lunge into Turn 7 to take second from a dumbfounded Albuquerque, and replicated the move a lap later to charge through into the lead before racing clear.

Behind the Action Express cars, fourth marked a fine result for the DragonSpeed team which had been two laps down on the leaders at one stage.

The pole-winning #60 Michael Shank Racing Ligier JSP2 had worked its way back into the top five on the final restart after recovering from going a lap down, but Olivier Pla was forced to return to the pits on the final lap with broken rear suspension.

Colin Braun won an almighty scrap for Prototype Challenge honours between his CORE autosport team and the PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports entry of Tom Kimber-Smith, the pair finishing the race just 1.282s apart having traded the lead throughout the 12 hours.

The GT Le Mans honours were arguably the fiercest contested of the field, with first the two BMW Team RLL M6 GTLMs leading, before the Corvette Racing C7.R's leapt to the front - while the Porsche 911s dominated the wet running before the halting of the race.

But after the #911 Porsche crew's hopes were crushed when Kevin Estre collided catastrophically with the #3 Corvette of Jan Magnussen as they battled for the class lead at Turn 1, it was eventually Tommy Milner in the sister #4 Corvette who took a stranglehold on events to win, although he was forced to resist late pressure from Dirk Werner after the final restart.

The #63 Scuderia Corsa entry followed up its pole position from a day earlier to claim the GT Daytona victory, with the Ferrari 488 GT3 securing victory on its first IMSA outing.
