Update: Doran squad holds solid lead

With two hours remaining, the Rolex 24 at Daytona appears to be going the way of Doran Lista Racing's Dallara-Judd, despite the best efforts of the Intersport Lola-Judd which held a nine lap lead for much of the event

The Intersport-run car of Jon Field, Michael Durand, Rick Sutherland and Duncan Dayton broke a driveshaft at the 18 hour mark, losing 17 minutes while the problem was rectified. In the meantime, the Doran squad - which features Didier Theys, Fredy Lienhard, Mauro Baldi and Max Papis - moved four laps clear at the head of the pack.

Unfortunately, however, the Lola was retired at the 21 hour mark when the gearbox input shaft failed. That means the Jim Matthews Racing Riley & Scott of Matthews, Guy Smith, Scott Sharp and Robby Gordon, which has been hampered by electrical problems and a puncture, is now second overall but seven laps behind.

Doran driver Baldi commented: "It's running quite good. We suffered so many problems with the battery, the electronics and so on. But there are not many laps left."

Rand Racing's squad of Anthony Lazzaro, Terry Borcheller, Bill Rand and Ralf Kelleners runs third overall, ahead of the Rocketsports-run Jaguar of Paul Gentilozzi, Brian Simo, Scott Pruett and Michael Lauer.
