Race: Bouchut/Belloc take win and title

Christophe Bouchut and Jean-Philippe Belloc are the 2001 FIA GT champions following their victory, alongside local hero Marc Duez, in the Spa 24 Hours on Sunday afternoon

Victory was assured when in the closing stages of the race, the Larbre's closest rival, the Carsport Holland Viper led by Mike Hezemans, was disqualified when the team tried to give driver Jeroen Bleekemolen a new battery for his broken down car.

Up until then the race had been incredibly close, with less than seven seconds separating the two at one stage. However, following the retirement of the second-placed Viper with two hours of the event remaining, the lead Larbre toured in formation with its sister car, driven by Sebastien Bourdais, Patrice Goueslard and Sebastien Dumez, for a team one-two victory.

The win, and Bouchut's and Belloc's titles, left Larbre team boss Jack Leconte a happy man.

"We had a spotless performance," he said. "It all went to plan. To win the FIA GT championship is a great honour. It's a strong championship - strong as anything in the world."

Third went to the Silver Viper driven by Belgian trio Robert Dierick, Eric De Doncker and Vincent Dupont, who finished seven laps down from the winners.

Fourth went to the Paul Belmondo Viper of Vincent Vosse, Emmanuel Clerico and Eric Helary while NGT honours and fifth overall went to the Red Bull Porsche of Luca Riccitelli, Dieter Quester, Antonio Garcia and Hans Willems.
