Ron Fellows will be given the chance to continue his championship challenge in the American Le Mans Series race at Portland next month, in spite of the Corvette Racing team's limited budget and original fears that the C5-R's engine was too loud for local noise regulations

GTS class standings leader Fellows and team mate Johnny O'Connell were to miss the Oregon race, along with Andy Pilgrim and Kelly Collins in the second car, due to both the noise problems and the team's limited programme of races for 2001.

However, it is thought that the team has negotiated a bye around the local noise law, which was broken by the C5-R's very loud V8 powerplants, allowing the outfit dispensation to race.

Add to that the prospect of both a drivers' and manufacturers' championship in the GTS class and the team has reversed its decision not to take part.

Fellows currently leads the standings on 75 points, just one ahead of team mate O'Connell. But in third place is Konrad Saleen driver Terry Borcheller, only three points behind Fellows with 72.

In the teams' standings, only 16 points separate the Corvette Racing outfit and the second-placed American Viper Racing squad.

The Portland race takes place in just over a week's time on August 4 at Portland International Raceway.

Tommy Archer, who raced in the ALMS in 1999 and 2000 for the ORECA Viper outfit, is making a return to the series at Portland with the American Viper Racing team. The American is to race in the Trans-Am race on Saturday, followed by the ALMS series event on Sunday.
