Cadillac remains on target
Cadillac hasn't set the world on fire in its first attempt at qualifying for the Le Mans 24 Hours, but with its lead car 11th on the grid after the first two timed sessions, number one driver Andy Wallace remains upbeat that the team will hit its first year targets
Wallace set Northstar Team Cadillac's fastest time early in the cooler second session. His 3m44.854s lap knocked some two and a half seconds off the best Cadillac time from session one, but was still over seven seconds from Rinaldo Capello's provisional pole time in an Audi R8. Nevertheless, the sportscar stalwart believes that the team has the reliability to stay near enough to the action to pick up the pieces should Audi fail.
"It will be tough to beat Audi," said Wallace, "but we are progressing. This is only the first year of our programme, so we're pleased. The main thing is that we are happy with our reliability. Sure we'd like a little more speed, but wouldn't everybody?"
Wallace remains unconcerned about the prospect of high temperatures lasting into the weekend: "For us it can get as hot as it likes, because we've got plenty in hand when it comes to cooling. We may have to run a slightly harder tyre compound, but the main change is that I might need a few more drinks down me during the race - I think I can handle that."
Wallace's team-mate Frank Lagorce remained similarly confident that the 'Caddies' would hit their first year target: "It was my first contact with the car and it looks like it will need some work, but the basics are good. By race time we will have a good car - especially when I have hot tyres and can really push."
