Barbour to run Panoz-Mugens in 2002
Crack American sportscar team Dick Barbour Motorsports will step up to the top prototype class for next year's American Le Mans Series with a pair of Panoz 07s powered by Japanese Mugen engines
The team has become the first to commit to the ex-Formula 1 supplier's new sportscar engine, which has been tested in the back of a Dome chassis in Japan. Barbour is also planning to take the cars to next year's Le Mans 24 Hours race.
Team principle Dick Barbour said: "It is every team's dream to compete for an overall championship and we have worked very hard the past couple of years and now feel that we are ready to and able to move to LMP900.
"We are delighted that Mugen has chosen Dick Barbour Motorsports and I am confident that the beautiful Panoz 07 will be a very competitive car."
Panoz Motorsports and ALMS boss Don Panoz said: "It is an honour to participate in the programme, with a premier motor manufacturer like Mugen and have representation by a professional team like Dick Barbour."
Two of Barbour's drivers from this year's ALMS, Didier de Radigues and John Graham, have been confirmed for 2002. They drove one of the team's Reynards in the secondary LMP675 prototype class this season.
