Andretti trio for 24 Hours
Three generations of the Andretti motor racing dynasty could team up to race in the Daytona 24 Hours next February, reports Autosport magazine this week
Ex-Formula 1 world champion and Indy 500 winner Mario Andretti is attempting to persuade his son Michael, who retired from the IndyCar Series last year, to make a one-off racing return in a Daytona Prototype.
The third generation Andretti would be Michael's 15-year-old son, Marco, a frontrunner in the Skip Barber-run Formula Dodge series.
Mario has already had discussions with the front-running Chip Ganassi Racing Grand-Am Squad about fielding an all-Andretti car in the event. "I spoke with Chip about it and I'm trying to convince Michael to do it," said Mario, who last raced in 2000.
"It would be great; Marco is chomping at the bit to do it, but it has to be the right situation and we've got to make something happen fast."
The plan could run into difficulties, however, because of Andretti Green's use of Honda engines in the IRL, and the fact that Ganassi's Grand-Am squad runs Lexus engines.
