Zakspeed-Forsythe deal confirmed
Former Grand Prix team Zakspeed will join forces with Forsythe Racing to form an all-new CART outfit for the 2001 season
CART veteran Bryan Herta will return to full-time competition to drive for the Zakspeed Forsythe Racing team, with the second seat in the squad likely to go to a German driver.
Peter Zakowski's German outfit competed in Formula One with limited success from 1985 to 1990. The team has lain dormant since running semi-works Porsches in the 1998 FIA GT Championship, and will now link-up with Gerry Forsythe's Forsythe Championship Racing team for a full programme in 2001. FCR only competed once this season, running a Reynard-Ford for Herta in a one-off at Laguna Seca.
No announcement was made about what engine package the team will use, but the most likely scenario is that Zakspeed Forsythe will run a pair of Reynard-Fords. It will be the first time that Zakspeed has been involved in top level single-seater racing since the team quit F1.
"This is motorsport on the highest international level," enthused Zakowski. "And in Forsythe Racing, we have got the best partner to be found."
