Yoong: Splitting Drive a Mistake

Team Malaysia driver and co-franchise holder Alex Yoong believes that they have gone the wrong way by splitting today's race between the team's drivers

Yoong: Splitting Drive a Mistake

Team Malaysia are the only team who are sharing today's inaugural races between two drivers, while the rest of the 25-car grid are leaving both races for one man. While former Minardi driver Yoong is driving the feature race for the team, while GP2 racing teammate Fairuz Fauzy is competing in the sprint race.

However, Yoong defended the decision in the interest of fairness.

Yoong told Autosport-Atlas: "This is what we agreed on at the beginning and that is how we are going to finish this meeting, but in hindsight it is not the best way to go about it. To have one driver doing all the testing and races is the best way.

"We tried to be fair with the drivers and give both of us some running. Faruz tested very well for us at Paul Ricard, and that's why we have gone in this direction.

"Because Fairuz did the Saturday morning practice session, I went into qualifying cold and that did affect me. In hindsight we were very happy with ninth. There is a lot more time to come from.

"It's only fair to give Fairuz his turn at the wheel. I think he is a capable driver and I think he will do a capable job for us. We need to sit down after this weekend and have a chat about it."
