Xilinx to help develop 'Kangaroo.tv'

Xilinx, the US programmable logic solutions provider, has entered into a design collaboration with WAVES, the Canadian inventor of 'Kangaroo.tv'. The first 'wireless audio visual entertainment system' designed to enhance the experience of spectators at sporting events, 'Kangaroo.tv' made its debut during the Champ Car World Series race at Long Beach, offering fans access to a range of event-specific interactive audio and video material

'Kangaroo.tv' offers users feeds from on-board and pit cameras, as well as replays, real-time driver standings and interviews. Several thousand 'Kangaroo.tv' units will be available to Champ Car fans through rental packages at all but the two European races in 2003, and at all venues next year. The hand-held device relies on Xilinx 'Spartan Series' chips.

"This is a perfect marriage of racing and technology and we're pleased to offer Champ Car fans the unique interactive service that 'Kangaroo.tv' provides," said Champ Car marketing VP Steve Fusek. "Spectators now have the opportunity to be 'up close and personal' with the drivers and pit crew as well as the ability to view more than one event at the same time."

WAVES VP Alain Charette commented: "The Champ Car World Series is just the beginning. In addition to expanding our reach within the racing industry, we plan to broaden the availability of 'Kangaroo.tv' to spectators at a variety of sporting events. Xilinx provided the low cost high-performance technology we needed to develop this innovative product, and in record time. Fans everywhere should keep an eye out for 'Kangaroo.tv' because the possibilities are limitless."
