Watts wins Oz series debut
British Touring Car Championship refugee Patrick Watts has injected new life into his career by claiming his first Super Touring win - in Australia
Driving a '98-spec ex-BTCC Peugeot 406, the 42-year-old scored the French make's first victory down under in the series opener at Queensland's Lakeside track.
Watts led home BMW ace Paul Morris in the second race at the wheel of a car prepared by tiny four-man independent team Starion Racing.
The victory was particularly sweet for Watts, who was dropped by Peugeot at the end of '97 in favour of New Zealander Paul Radisich. Watts said, 'This proves that the Peugeot always had the potential to be a winner. I'm very pleased for the team because they have put a lot of effort in. We pitched up with the car on a trailer towed by a ute [pick-up], and beat the works Audis, BMWs and Volvos.'
Watts is only scheduled to race once more for the team at the second round of the series at Oran Park. Then he returns to Britain to race a Ford Mustang in the British GT Championship.
