Warm-up: Kanaan moves into frame

Brazilian Tony Kanaan established his credentials as a possible challenger at Road America today by topping the Champ Car morning warm-up session

The Mo Nunn Racing Reynard-Honda driver headed the time sheets in the brief half-hour session as a lot of drivers limited running to just a handful of laps at the sweeping Elkhart Lake circuit. His time of 1m51.743s headed off PacWest's rookie sensation Scott Dixon by just 0.148s, while Max Wilson took third ahead of French-Canadian Patrick Carpentier.

Although Kanaan starts the race down in 17th place, the open, flowing Road America circuit offers plenty of opportunities for passing, giving drivers scope for making up places. Of the top qualifiers, only Dixon, who starts third, was at the sharp end in warm up. Poleman Kenny Brack's Team Rahal Lola was down in 11th, second-placed driver Alex Tagliani was only 17th while Gil de Ferran was 19th.

Briton's US-based star Dario Franchitti, who starts from the back row of the grid after spinning off in qualifying, also failed to set a representative warm-up time and ended up 18th.
