Vauxhall stays with Astra for BTCC

Triple Eight Race Engineering, which operates the VX Racing factory team for GM's British brand, Vauxhall Motors, out of its Banbury HQ, has decided to continue the development of its successful Astra Coupé in the 2004 Green Flag MSA British Touring Car Championship, instead of switching to the four-door Vectra model which has been under evaluation

Vauxhall's 2004 programme was announced at the Autosport International show in Birmingham. "We tested the Vectra and the Astra back-to-back," said Vauxhall Motorsport spokesman Stuart Harris. "The Vectra was part of a far bigger programme because it will be racing in 2004 in Germany, but we'll be continuing with the Astra Coupe this season.

"We're going to continue developing the Vectra, in partnership with our guys in Europe. There is a possibility that the Vectra will make an appearance either this year, or potentially in 2005. There are more and more reasons to use a four-door car in touring car racing, such as aerodynamics and the like. However, we're pretty confident that in 2004 the Astra will do the business for us."
