Vasser lands Rahal drive
Patrick Racing's Jimmy Vasser will switch to Bobby Rahal's Champ Car team next year, following the decision by current boss Pat Patrick not to take up his option on the former CART champion for 2002
Vasser will replace the Ganassi-bound Kenny Brack at Team Rahal, and is also set to get a shot at next year's Indianapolis 500 with his new team.
"I am finally getting together with Bobby," said the 35-year-old Californian. "I am looking forward to running for Team Rahal and also going to Indianapolis."
Rahal's second driver Max Papis seems unlikely to keep his seat after colliding with team mate Brack twice this season. Rahal has hinted he wants an all-American line up in 2002.
"I would like to hire Americans again," said Rahal, who has plans to test Americans Buddy Rice and Alex Barron. "There are a lot of people pounding the streets for a ride, and most of them are quite young. We are willing to take a certain amount of risk on that."
With Vasser's switch to Rahal, the door looks to have been left open for veteran Roberto Moreno to stay on at Patrick. His stock rose last weekend after taking victory in Vancouver, but according to the Brazilian, talks about next season have yet to take place.
"As far as I know, it's all up to Patrick," said Moreno. "I love this team. I think the team has great momentum now. If Patrick gives continuity to the team, the success is just going to grow and grow. I'd very much like to continue with that, but I can't say too much at the moment."
