V8 STAR: Mutsch wins at Hockenheim
Thomas Mutsch scored his first V8 STAR victory of the year as Zakspeed team-mates Pedro Lamy and Robert Lechner ran into trouble at Hockenheim
Lamy started the race from pole, but it was Lechner who took the lead at the start. The ex-Grand Prix driver then passed his young team-mate after six laps.
However, his chance of victory was lost when he failed to follow the safety car into the pits as the rules require at the end of the first part of the race. He was given a stop-go penalty for his error and dropped back to 15th. "This will not happen to me again," he vowed. A great charge in the second half rewarded Lamy with an eventual third place.
Lechner took the lead after Lamy's dramas, but collisions with Steffen Widmann and Patrick Simon cost him dear, and he dropped to second behind Mutsch.
First round winner Johnny Cecotto finished fourth. He now lies second in the points standing, just two points behind new leader Mutsch.
