Unser Jr’s surgery complete
Team Penske driver Al Unser Jr. has undergone a successful two hour operation to repair the fracture to his right ankle sustained in Sunday's season opener at Miami's Homestead circuit
The accident happened on the first lap of the race when rookie Naoki Hattori ploughed into him.
The operation was carried out last night at Indianapolis's Methodist Hospital by Dr. Terry Trammell, who is Chief Orthopaedic Consultant for the CART FedEx Championship Series. He used a plate and six screws to repair the ankle.
While Unser Jr. will not be able to walk or put weight on the ankle for eight to twelve weeks, but he could be racing again a lot sooner.
In a statement issued by the team, Trammell said, 'Unser Jr. is in good condition, the surgery went well and there were no suprises. It will be four to six weeks before Al can get back in a race car and we will need to build a carbon fibre brace for the ankle which will allow him to push the pedal.'
Unser Jr. is expected to rest at the hospital for the rest of the week, before beginning an intensive therapy programme next week.
