TMS accuses NASCAR of ISC bias

The president of Texas Motor Speedway, Eddie Gossage, has accused NASCAR of bias towards tracks owned by International Speedway Corporation, in response to reports that ISC's California Speedway will be granted a second Winston Cup event for 2004 [May 16]. Texas has been lobbying for several years for a second Cup date

Gossage told ESPN: "Certainly ISC has the right to move races within its own company. But it begs the question more than ever, why is it that they can find and create dates out of thin air for California, Kansas, Chicagoland, Homestead etc? Why? Well I think there's only one reason why, [and] that's because NASCAR owns those race tracks."

Gossage also accused NASCAR of charging TMS a higher sanctioning fee than ISC venues. "I'd sure like to see what the sanctioning fee is [for California] - that dirty little secret that nobody can talk about. We know what our sanctioning fee. We believe from talking to others in the industry that our sanctioning fee is many times higher than anybody else's in the sport."
