Team Rahal to sign Jourdain (updated)

Mexican Champ Car driver Michel Jourdain has landed one of the CART series' top drives at Team Rahal, as team-mate to American Jimmy Vasser for 2002

The deal is set to be announced today (Wednesday) at the Intercontinental Hotel in Mexico City.

Team boss Bobby Rahal needs funding to run a second car after Miller beer withdrew its support from CART to concentrate on Vasser's Indianapolis 500 assault. Jourdain has backing from Gigante, a chain of self-service superstores that sell everything from groceries to office equipment. There are sixty-three Gigante superstores in Mexico and three in Los Angeles.

Jourdain has signed a one-year contract with options to further the deal with Rahal. However, it does not include a drive alongside Vasser at this year's Indianapolis 500.

The 25-year-old has raced in CART since 1996 when he was just 19 years old. He drove for the Payton-Coyne team in 1997-'99 and the Bettenhausen/Herdez team the past two years, with his best result being a third place in a photo finish behind Patrick Carpentier and Dario Franchitti in last year's Michigan 500.

Jourdain's Lola-Ford will be turned out in white with red trim and will carry number nine. Vasser's Shell-backed car will be number eight.
