Stuck and Sainz for Nurburgring 24hrs
Hans Stuck and Carlos Sainz will team up as two of Volkswagen's drivers for a trio of new Sciroccos in the Nurburgring 24 Hours next month
Two-time Le Mans winner Stuck and two-time World Rally champion Sainz will be joined by two other rally drivers, four circuit racers, and two journalists for the debut of the marque's new model on the Nordschleife.
Stuck has won the event three times, most recently in 2004 in a BMW M3 GTR, but is looking forward to racing for Volkswagen for whom he has worked as a representative since the beginning of this year.
"I'm proud that, at my age, I have the chance to take part in the racing debut of a new car like the Scirocco," he said. "It's a great thing for me to be teammates with Carlos Sainz. In rallying he's a shining light, similar to Michael Schumacher in Formula One.
"For me, the 24 hour race at the Nurburgring, along with the Monaco Grand Prix, the Le Mans 24 Hours, and the Indy 500, is one of the world's four most attractive races. With the Scirocco we can compete for class victory and a good result overall."
For Sainz, now a factory VW driver, the 24 Hours will be his first circuit race in over 20 years.
"My last circuit race was in the 1980s at the beginning of my career," he said. "I've never driven a 24-hour race and I'm looking forward to it very much. I only know the Nurburgring from what others have told me about it and I've heard that this race poses a very special challenge."
This year's race will take place over the weekend of May 23-25.
