St Petersburg gets 2003 first race date
CART have announced that the 2003 Champ Car schedule will kick off on February 21-23 with a new race in St. Petersburg, Florida.
CART boss Chris Pook recently stated his preference to start and end the series in Florida. This announcement brings his plan is one step closer to reality.
"It has been no secret that we here at CART and our partners at Dover Downs Entertainment have been extremely interested in having a Champ Car race in St. Petersburg, and it is truly a pleasure that we are able to make this announcement today," said Pook. "The area is another major market in the United States and is a market that has been virtually untapped by major league auto racing until now.
"It seems only natural that we would open the CART Championship Series season in Florida during the month of February, considering that the state is the centre of the motor racing universe during that time of year."
Beginning next year, Pook wants to move CART's 'sneak preview' media days to Sebring International Raceway a couple of weeks prior to the St. Petersburg race. He also hopes to move the CART/ALMS doubleheader, which is being run for the first time this year on a downtown Miami street course, to November.
