Small entry forces Rally of Wales cancellation

The International Rally of Wales, the opening round of the 2003 Pirelli British Rally Championship, has been cancelled after insufficient entries were received to make it financially viable. Only 25 entries had been submitted for the event, which was due to be held over March 21-23. Series promoter BRC Licensing stresses that the remaining rounds of the championship are not at risk

Event press officer Jamie Edwards explained: "Unfortunately the event has not has a title sponsor for the past two years, and we are dependent on receiving a high number of entries to make it a success in financial terms."

BRCL chairman Ian Coomber commented: "Shortly after the formation of BRCL in January this year, we heard rumours that the Rally of Wales was at risk. We immediately contacted the organising committee, and were assured that the event would go ahead as planned. Members of the BRCL board have been in contact with the organisers throughout this week, but unfortunately it is now too late to take the steps that could, and should, have saved it."
