Sepang circuit takes over Proton series

Malaysian state-owned automobile manufacturer Proton has appointed Sepang International Circuit as the promoter and organiser of its Proton National Championships, with immediate effect. The Motorsport Asia organisation has promoted the series since their inception in 2001.The Proton-SIC partnership was announced by Youth & Sports Minister Datuk Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, who is also the chairman of the Malaysia Motorsports Commission

"The growing success of the Merdeka Millennium endurance race and the Malaysian Super Series gave us the confidence to recommend the appointment of SIC to be the promoter and organiser of the events," he said. "We strongly believe that the series can grow to become the catalysts for motorsport development in Malaysia, especially at the grass-roots level."

The 2003 Proton National Championships comprise a one-make Satria GTi series and the Proton Production Car Championship. Both are scheduled over six weekends, with 12 rounds. The opening four rounds were held at Sepang on June 8 and the Johor circuit on June 29. The next two rounds will be incorporated in the Malaysian Super Series in Sepang on September 29.
